Tips to keep your top hat in excellent condition
Top hats can generally be cleaned using a hard, thin-bristled brush over warm (i.e. not boiling hot) steam. Sensible use of gall soap and dry-cleaning naphtha produces good results. Do not use any spirits or alcohol as this dissolves the shellac! Whenever wet, place a top hat aside on a level surface with the open end facing upwards - this helps maintain the attractive curved shape.

Measuring the circumference of your head
Have someone else measure your head – using a normal household tape measure joined around the broadest section of your head where the hat will be worn – from your forehead to the back of your head and round again. To obtain the most accurate possible measurement in millimetres, it is best to be sitting on a chair, looking straight ahead. You can, of course, also enquire at a hat shop.
Measuring the shape of your head
The inside measurements of the head, consisting of the inside length and the inside width, provide the shape of your head.
These measurements are even more important than the circumference of your head in centimetres (the hat size).
A hat maker measures head shapes using a conformateur. However, you can also measure the length and width of your head using a large calliper rule, or wooden clamp. You can also take the measurements from another well-fitting hat.
The length and width measurements (inside measurements) provide a good indication of your head shape. If you give these measurements to us, we shall be able to advise you properly on a suitable hat. For this reason, the inside measurements, as well as the head circumference/hat size, are indicated on all of our hats.
